Gythio is a historic town and port located in the southern Peloponnese near the mouth of the river Evrotas, west of the cove of the Laconian Gulf. It is built amphitheatrically at the eastern foot of Mount Larysio and is the main port of the Laconian Gulf and the second of the southern Peloponnese, after Kalamata. The southern edge of the city of Gythio is connected through a small pier with a small island, ancient Kranai or Marathonisi, where the tower Tzannetaki, the octagonal homonymous lighthouse (Kranai lighthouse) and the small church of Agios Petros are located. Gythio is the seat of the homonymous municipality that includes 18 municipal districts, as well as the seat of the Holy Metropolis of Mani. The port of Gytheio, despite the fact that it is very safe and located in a very commercially advantageous position, is unfortunately shallow and therefore larger commercial or tourist ships cannot moor there. Most of them are small fishing boats and some private sailing boats. This is why - despite the fact that the city due to its location is of significant tourist interest - two or three cruise ships with foreign tourists who visit Gythio once a week in the summer `dock` off and tourists are transported by boats. However, in the last three years (since 2012), with funds from the NSRF, dredging works have begun on the eastern breakwater, but due to the economic situation, as is the case with many other public works, the progress of completion has stagnated. The residents of Gythio and the surrounding areas believe that if their city acquires a normal port, Gythio will experience a very large economy. video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aKNZAs4bbk
